5 out of 5 stars Total war 1   August 9, 2009

Apparently I did not pay attention to where I purchased this from. I own the game, but lost it in a move, so I repurchased it here. It ended up being the Euro version in French. It had English too, under settings, but due to compatibility issues It doesn't work here.

4 out of 5 stars Complicated at first, but great overall   January 12, 2009

When I bought this, I was expecting a respectively hard and involved game. I got what I wanted in full. This is not a game friendly to casual gamers or ones who like uncomplicated games, you can't just pick it up and learn it within minutes, but I don't consider this a fault personally. It is very rewarding once you find out where everything is and know how to use it when. I would venture a guess that I haven't done nearly half of that this offers, and I already think I got more than my money's worth. Everything from a great campaign, to historical battles to custom ones too, it's got everything I wanted and more.
Just an aside, but no, I wasn't paid to write this, I just know what I like. For a game that's going on 7 years old, it is incredibly fun.

4 out of 5 stars Get a different copy.   November 24, 2008

Medieval: Total War is a very good game, it's fun and has plenty of playtime and replayability. However, this copy may lack, if you're seeking to play multiplayer DO NOT get this as you will be unable. I've heard this version has some compatibility issues with some computers as well. Medieval: Total War is definitely recommended if you like strategy, empire building, history and management. Management is especially light here for those who prefer action. If you like Civilization or Age of Empires, you'll probably like this.

4 out of 5 stars An all-day game   December 9, 2008

Strategy games are my favorite genre and this is one of my faves in my collection. It's not as fast-paced as, say, Stronghold, but it's a nice change from the usual strategy games like Age of Empires. It has a fairly high replayability, but can test your gaming endurance.

The main portion of the game is played from a world map view which doesn't sound too exciting, but each battle fought can be done from the standpoint of a battlefield commander with each unit being individually rendered. The battles do allow for some strategies not found in other games such as ambushing your enemy, flank attacks, accounting for morale, etc.

One of my favorite aspects of the game is the historical context. It's not quite an educational game but does give a good introduction to various unit types and backgrounds, typical defenses of the age, and an overall feeling of the era. This is a more serious game than, say, Stronghold. What it lacks in V-Card taxing graphics and epic movies is greatly made up for in the old-school feeling of a well-researched game that encourages the imagination, which, in my opinion, can often lend itself to a better overall playing experience. Remember the old DOS games with crappy graphics and Internal sound that you just couldn't stop playing because it felt so creative and interactive? That's the feeling you get here, but with better graphics and sound. Great soundtrack, if rather unvaried.

I agree with a previous reviewer that if you liked the Civ games you'll probably like this.

I gave the 'fun' level only 3 stars because of the lack of funny tidbits found in some games like the old World of Warcraft or in Stronghold. But it doesn't have to be 'fun' to be greatly enjoyable. I gave 4 stars overall. Good points for being a creative and immersive game.

(BTW I thought the Vikings expansion was excellent.)

I got this many years ago, only played it a little. However, it was good enough to encourage me to buy Rome TW and Medieval TW2. Get the newer versions, but this was fun, for then.
