5 out of 5 stars Not the most serious, but the most fun to play   October 30, 2004

This is a kid's review too, but hopefully with a bit more intelligence and comments badsed on the actual game, not screenshots.

I have a copy of the Japanese version, have only played on it for 6 - 8 hours, but can safely say that this game is better than Mario Tennis 64.

It is redundant to speak of Nintendo overusing the Mario name when games of this quality are being produced. I could care less if who fronts the game, at the end of the days what is most important is if it plays well and is good value for money.

The mechanics of the game are very similar to the N64 version, easy to get into, deep enough for those who want to take the game more seriously.

The courts are fabulous looking, animation is wonderful, even the crowds look good this time. Like the last game, ach of the players have different skills, and actually FEEL different when you play them, not like many other more "serious" tennis games.

Those worried about the flashy super shots with cut scenes needn't fear, they can be switched on or off so purists can also enjoy this game, it's not just a simple party game.

Although there are lots of party modes, more than in the previous game and better done, too.

Comparing this with top spin for XBOX...while top spin uses its "special" shot structure better (in this game I have found drop shots to be difficult and a bit unrealistic) Mario Power Tennis plays a better game, as you are able to use the court much more, in that the game is less about simply overpowering your opponent, but rather out thinking them.

Wait for the American release though, there is lots of Japanses text in the game.

If you are reading this, I wont insult your intelligence by saying that "fans of shooters and FPS might want to stay away"... if you like tennis games thi one MUST be played.

At first, I was a little put off with certain aspects of the game. I was expecting it to be almost exactly like the first to a tee. But I was wrong. And I'm glad! Mario Power Tennis is something else. It now has a feature where you can have distractions all over the court causing you to trip and slip all over, even slowing down sometimes if you hit them. Don't worry though, if you don't like them you can turn them off (in 2 Player mode). The gameplay is awesome and just as intense, if not more so than the first. Especially the one on one matches where you have to play the full court alone.
There are 3 unlockable characters if I'm not mistaken but I won't give them away here. One big disappointment for me was that Toad somehow was left out of this one as a playable character.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the first without a doubt   December 30, 2004

Mario Power Tennis is a huge step forward from the last. Everything about this game is better. There are mini games, which you start out with 5 but you can unlock more when you win tournaments. There are better stages and a lot more options. The only thing that I can say is bad with this game is the "powershot" that each player has. Each player can use their powershots anytime in the game, which slows down the gameplay because everything stops and you watch your opponent or yourself make their move. In exhibition mode there is an option to turn this off but when you play tournaments you have to live with it. Other than that, there are no other problems. This game flows smoothly and will provide you with hours of fun. The mini games is what brings the game all together. It's not just another tennis game, Mario and Co. make it exciting with the way they play it and their special weapons. There are countless mini games available that you can unlock which makes you more determined to play the tournament mode. There is no way you can get bored with this game because you have so many different things you can do. Of course, if you're one of the few who do like to play the regular tennis, then you can set the options to do so. So, as you can see, this game can be played by anyone of any age. You don't necessarily have to be a kid to play this, even though Nintendo is known for making adorable harmless games for the younger audience. This game is for all ages. If you're contemplating whether to spend the $50 on this game, stop. This game is well worth the money.

This has been the best tennis game ever! Which tennis game ever had Power Shots. Which tennis game ever had a funny movie at the begginning. Which tennis game ever had outakes at the credits when you finish a tornament. None other then Mario Power Tennis.Oh yeah! there is 4 unlockable characters. Wiggler(defensive), Paratroopa(techniche),Fly Guy(tricky), and Petey Piranah(power). 4 unlockable special games Mechanichal Bowser Mayhem, Volley Blooper, Coin Collectors, and Ballon Panic. There is also an unlockable tornament which is the Star Tornament.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for any tennis fan!   January 29, 2005

Liked Mario Tennis for N64? Well if you did, you will love Mario Power Tennis. While there are similarities, the GameCube obviously is far more powerful, allowing for crisper graphics, more features, etc. Here is a breakdown of the game:

Graphics: A
Sound: B+
Fun Factor: A
Control: B-
Replay: A+
Overall game: A

I highly recommend a purchase if you are a tennis fan and a rental if you are not. A superb tennis game which is tons of fun.
